  3. This is the first edition of a booklet entitled ``Zen and the Art of 
  4. the Internet: A Beginner's Guide to the Internet''.  It's roughly 100 
  5. pages in length, and is divided into the following sections:

  7.     * Chapter 1--Network Basics 
  8.     * Chapter 2--Electronic Mail 
  9.     * Chapter 3--Anonymous FTP 
  10.     * Chapter 4--Usenet News 
  11.     * Chapter 5--Telnet 
  12.     * Chapter 6--Tools (finger/ping/etc) 
  13.     * Chapter 7--Commercial Uses of the Internet 
  14.     * Chapter 8--Things you'll hear about (projects/organizations) 
  15.     * Chapter 9--Finding Out More 
  16.     * An appendix on reaching other networks 
  17.     * An appendix on mail-based file retrieval (FTPmail, archive servers) 
  18.     * An appendix on how to create a newsgroup 
  19.     * A glossary of 80+ terms 
  20.     * A bibliography of over a dozen books and two dozen papers 
  21.       and magazines related to the Internet and similar topics.

  23. Why do you want this?  Well, for one thing it's free.  It's also 
  24. unique--there presently exists no single comprehensive collection of 
  25. the information directly related to being connected to the Internet. 
  26. Most users learn by word of mouth and stumbling upon things.  This 
  27. guide should give you a reference to consult if you're curious about 
  28. what can be done with the Internet.  It also presents the fundamental 
  29. topics that are all too often assumed and considered trivial by many 
  30. network users.  This is your first "virtual quickie." 
  31.  
  32. Now, how to read it.  The file zen-1.0.dvi is a DVI (DeVice 
  33. Independent) file created by the TeX typesetting system.  Filters 
  34. exist to convert these DVI files into printer-specific files for a variety 
  35. of printers.  Also included is the file zen-1.0.PS, a Postscript version. 
  36. This can be printed on a number of printers, most notably the Apple 
  37. LaserWriter series.  (We tested it with a Pacific Page cartridge in an 
  38. HP LaserJet III.) 
  39.  
  40. An ASCII version is not yet available; any mention of a file zen-1.0.txt 
  41. is premature.

  43. In the tar file zen-1.0.tar.Z (a compressed tar file---ask your local 
  44. system administrator how to extract the files from this), there are a 
  45. number of files suffixed by `.texi'.  These are the TeXinfo source to 
  46. the booklet.  TeX is a free typesetting system, the source for which 
  47. you can FTP or buy on a tape.  TeXinfo is the system written on top of 
  48. TeX by the GNU Project for easy manual creation.  To create a DVI file 
  49. of your own (for whatever reason), simply tex the file zen-1.0.texi. 
  50. Right now you can't create the info file needed for reading it in the 
  51. info system or in Emacs' info mode.  Contact me if you'd like to find 
  52. out why not, and suggest possible solutions.

  54. I'm sorry, we cannot supply hardcopy versions of this booklet at this 
  55. time.  The support staffs of educational institutions are encouraged to 
  56. put multiple copies out for their user communities.  Also any companies 
  57. in need of training literature are welcome to use this booklet. (The 
  58. author is keenly interested in hearing from anyone considering such a 
  59. large distribution; if you're going to do such a thing, please let me 
  60. know.)

  62. Being that this is the first edition, a good amount of information was 
  63. been omitted, in trade for being able to release it for general 
  64. critique this Spring.  (Otherwise it probably wouldn't be presentable 
  65. again until the summer.) In particular WAIS, IRC, and a few other 
  66. things stand out.  They will be added in a more complete version; 
  67. suggestions on what to include are more than welcome. Hopefully the 
  68. thinner chapters (e.g. commercial uses) will grow soon too.  (For example, 
  69. I want to include an appendix on what it takes to become connected to the 
  70. Internet, and perhaps one on how to register a domain name--both vital 
  71. issues to people who are contemplating joining the Internet but aren't 
  72. quite sure what's involved or what's "inside the black box.") 
  73.  
  74. In case you're interested, later this spring the second edition of Zen 
  75. will be coming out as a Prentice-Hall book.  You may want to consider 
  76. looking for it in your local bookstores then, since it'll be in a 
  77. nicely bound format and contains approx. 30 pages of new information, 
  78. as well as hundreds of updates and revisions.  College bookstores will 
  79. hopefully be stocking it, since it will be used in introductory 
  80. Internet classes, and as a tutorial.  If you'd like to be notified
